Amateur Best.

January 27, 2012

Joe Primary 1 is back! He silently released his debut album a year and a bit ago, did a few shows, and then disappeared. What he left behind was a deeply underrated collection of pop songs and my eternal hope that he would return.

Now under the moniker Amateur Best, he releases debut single Be Happy on the brilliant Double Denim label. Just as accomplished, but a little more reserved this time, it’s a welcome return*.

Lower Dens Are Back.

January 26, 2012

I first wrote about Lower Dens back in 2010 when I completely fell in love with their debut record. It slowly became one of my favourites of the year and when I finally saw the band play live, everything fell in to place.

Live, they flood and engulf the room with those same layers of dark and brooding guitars and heartbreak. And now they’re back with a new track and an album to follow.

Nootropics is out on April 30th via new Domino imprint Ribbon Music, while you can download Brains below. Driving to the point of metronomic, it’s well worth falling in love again.

A Bear On His Own.

January 23, 2012

Check out the schizophrenic new video from Cardiff’s Islet.

The band released their debut album proper, Illuminated People, today. A catatonic collection of genre-breaking, sugar swollen left-field pop, it’s the closest the band have come to ever capturing their utter brilliance live. It deserves many listens.

Daughter.

January 22, 2012

Elena Tonra from London makes music under the name Daughter. She is one of the most talented and exciting young musicians I have had the stunning pleasure of watching play live in the last year. Honest, breathtaking and brilliant. You have a few hours left to download a free 3 track demos EP for the [...]

Inland Sea on Film

December 30, 2011

New video from Inland Sea, a 10 piece from Brisbane who first stole my heart with their debut Traitor EP. This is their new single, from a forthcoming more developed EP. They sound like bloody Fleetwood Mac here, which can only ever be a good thing. The band should be visiting the UK next year.

Dolfinz

December 18, 2011

I suck. Firstly, I haven’t blogged here in about three years, and secondly, I meant to write about this band so long ago and didn’t. Here’s to making amends. Dolfinz are a duo from Stonehaven, the town that spawned indie hearthrobs Copy Haho. Dolfinz don’t sound like Copy Haho, but probably draw on similar influences [...]

Pearl Fiction

November 27, 2011

New video from Pearl Fiction. As the Youtube comment says… First The Sound of Arrows album and now a Pearl album in January. So much Swedish pop! Couldn’t say it better myself. The new album is due January 25th (1985, apparently)
