Kuhrye-oo

May 15, 2012

Check out the new video from Canadian producer Kuhrye-oo, co-directed by and starring Grimes.

I had the pleasure of hanging out with this guy last week, as well as seeing him perform solo and as part of Born Gold’s band. He is an amazing guy and an incredibly talented musician. It was really exciting to be in his company.

He’s got a new EP out now via UNO. This is the highlight with out a doubt. Dropout, glitchy and full of soul.

As well as playing with Born Gold, you might recognise him from playing in Grimes’ backing band at SXSW. He’ll also be out on tour with Cadence Weapon in the UK later this month when he opens up for Japandroids.

4 x Awesome.

April 26, 2012

Check out this awesome new four way split from Art Is Hard. Featuring four of the best new grunged out guitar bands from around the UK’s DIY scene (GUM, Playlounge, Joanna Gruesome, Keel Her), it’s a record that we’ll surely be looking back on fondly in a few years time. It’s difficult to pick a favourite band from this release, but check out the video from GUM below…

Fanzine.

April 23, 2012

Check out the new video from London’s Fanzine. It’s a weird trip and worth watching until the end. The track itself, a gorgeous summer breeze of bright guitars and relaxed harmonies that couldn’t be any further from the weather we’re currently enjoying. The single gets a release next Monday through the exciting Best Fit imprint, [...]

SPLASHH

April 19, 2012

Really like these guys – an Australian duo now living in London. I first heard them last week on Jon Hillcock’s excellent New Noise podcast. He found them through Cardiff alumni Jake May’s Basement Fever blog. It’d almost be rude not to stick them up here. Reminds me of some of the sick sounds I [...]

Crash Of Rhinos

April 15, 2012

I’m completely in love with Derby’s Crash of Rhinos. Last year’s Distal is a kick in the gut of post-hardcore guitars and swelling lyrics, and now it’s getting a re-release courtesy of the ever brilliant Big Scary Monsters. Big Sea has to be one of my most over-played tracks of the last few weeks. Grab [...]

Death At Sea

April 13, 2012

I was tipped off on these guys last week and just can’t stop listening. They’re from Liverpool, but sound like something from the West Coast, USA via Matador’s back-catalogue circa 1994. Thick and vibrant guitars, bleakly sharp lyrics, and a silky gravel voice. It’s like someone made a band just for my own sulking ears.

PINS

April 6, 2012

New 4 piece from Manchester. Just sold out of their first tape release. There’s not much info about after that but I really like this. Dark and interesting, I’m looking forward to seeing how they pull it off live.

Another year.

March 23, 2012

Another year of SXSW is over. I’m back at home with massive amounts of frustration at having missed about ninety per cent of what I wanted to see, but also pretty stoked with some of the bands I did manage to catch. Here’s some of my picks… There was so much awesome music from Montreal [...]
